This thought experiment has been ruminating in my mind as well. I don’t think we’re anywhere near AGI replacing most of what humans can do, but in 20-30 years? Yea, we might be there entirely.
The pessimistic part of me expects the government/society to find ways to continue keeping human beings busy. Idle hands are not good for governmental stability.
What form this busy takes is where I find myself debating. Will we all focus on passion projects that seem to be more artistic in nature? Will we simply oversee the robots and make sure they don’t kill us? Will we go back to our roots and live simpler lives? I’m dying to find out.
Haha, I love co-conspirators! TY for reading!! I may be pessimistic but whenever this topic rises, I always think about this scene (https://youtu.be/9Qs3GlNZMhY) where Agent Smith is explaining to Morpheus how the first version of The Matrix was a perfect world for humans where everyone had what they wanted and everything was go-lucky, but that world all totally went sideways. I would love to be proven wrong but I genuinely just don't believe a world where all people are pursuing happiness, passion projects, and doing "good work" works. Hedonistic treadmill, habituation, re-baselining, etc. Over time, humans would find a way to --despite having *everything*-- grow discontent, civil unrest would ensue, and everything would go up in flames. (I mean, fwiw, the Bible tells a similar story if I remember right. Literally, the oldest book on the planet says this. Like, humans will find a way to mess up paradise; it's who we are and what we do!!)
Thus, like Agent Smith says, this is why some degree of misery is required. Some drudgery. BNW also has a similar message too: contrast is necessary. "There is no black without white; no day without night", so forth. Even with robots and AI everywhere, I think governments will find a way to keep Graeber's BS jobs and drudgery around. Also, I do think rapid depopulation is inevitable too. Unless the scientists figure out the whole "baby-in-a-box" thing (which they may!), it's honestly hard for me to see most people choosing to have kids over playing Nintendo, binging Netflix, pursuing passion projects, etc.
You know I love being your co-conspirator.
